The makers of the Japanese dark fantasy anime television series “Attack on Titan” are extending the final season of their adaptation of the famed manga.

The show’s first season in 2013 consisted of 25 episodes in two parts of 13 & 12. The second season in 2017 was a single run of 12 episodes. The third season in 2018-2019 was 22 episodes in two parts of 12 & 10.

The current fourth and final season consisted seemingly of two parts – one part of 16 episodes which aired mostly in early 2021, and the second part of 12 episodes which wrapped its run in Japan this week with what was believed to be the final episode.

Now comes confirmation that the final season will score a third (and presumably final) part consisting of an unknown number of episodes, with that part to air sometime in 2023.

The news won’t be a huge surprise to fans. The anime has generally adapted 1-2 chapters of the manga which totalled 139 chapters in all. The recent penultimate episode last week was based on the 129th chapter and so one more batch of episodes should allow for a full adaptation of the saga. The show’s producers have previously confirmed plans to adapt the manga all the way up to the end.
