In recent years, Epic has scored much attention for their much-vaunted Unreal Engine 5 gaming engine which will power some of the biggest titles of the coming generation of video games.

However, Unreal Engine’s market share stands well below that of Unity, the single biggest game engine on the market which is used by the easy majority of mobile games and plenty of acclaimed desktop games ranging from “Among Us” and “Cuphead” to “Firewatch,” “Inside,” “Ori and the Blind Forest,” “Subnautica,” and “Monument Valley”.

Unity has also made some high profile acquisitions in recent months including Ziva Dynamics and acclaimed VFX firm Weta Digital.

Recently, to mark the Game Developers Conference that ran last week, the company’s award-winning Demo Team released a real-time rendered cinematic teaser “Enemies”.

The clip showcases Unity’s latest improvements to its engine including its High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP), new high-end Adaptive Probe Volume lighting system, an all-new strand-based Hair solution, and an evolved Digital Human toolkit.

Like with Unreal Engine, Unity is continuing to expand its business beyond games and into other forms of entertainment such as film – making the game engine industry-agnostic.

Gaming however remains a big part of Unity’s portfolio with the company’s report earlier this month indicating the number of games created with the engine increased by 93% in 2021.
