A new report at FanByte (via VGC indicates that Capcom’s unannounced but widely-expected remake of the fourth “Resident Evil” game will adopt more of a horror tone than the original.
The original, generally considered the best title in the series and one of the best games of all time, follows rookie cop turned secret service agent Leon S. Kennedy arriving in a European village during the day with the narrative running over the course of 24 hours.
The new report suggests the remake adjusts the timeline so that the famous village introduction set piece, and much of the rest of the game, takes place at night.
The report indicates the title is being directly inspired by discarded demos for the original GameCube preview reels which show scenes like Leon getting possessed by black smoke and fighting off living dolls. Only some of that made it into the original game, with the rest left on the cutting room floor.
Direct comparisons are now being made to that cut material during the development of the remake which is also reportedly expanding Ada’s role. That move is inspired by the Assignment: Ada mini-game and Separate Ways campaign with plans to combine them into a more fluid and polished companion piece and large expansion to the game.
Capcom remade the second “Resident Evil” in 2019 to much acclaim and the third in 2020 to a more mixed reaction. The new report indicates the project leads on the RE2 remake are now in charge of this.
