Next “Mass Effect” To Use Unreal Engine 5?

Next Mass Effect To Use Unreal Engine 5
BioWare & EA

The original “Mass Effect” game trilogy, and its recent ‘Legendary Edition’ remaster, were created in Unreal Engine 3 and they remain one of the highlights of that iteration of the gaming engine.

The less well regarded “Mass Effect: Andromeda” was built in EA’s Frostbite engine and the various complexities and issues with building the game in that engine led to multiple issues at launch which sank the game (and temporarily the franchise).

Thankfully it looks as if EA and developer BioWare have learned their lesson. BioWare producer Brenon Holmes recently tweeted about an open position at the company for an associate technical director with the ideal candidate having experience with Unreal Engine 4 and 5.

Holmes says: “Come, join our team and work with us on the next Mass Effect game!”. Reporter Jeff Grubb followed up on that report and confirmed from his sources that the new title is being developed specifically in Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.

The new engine was most recently used on “The Matrix Awakens” tech demo which has scored rave reaction for the quality on offer. The next game in the series doesn’t have a title as yet, nor a release date, but is a direct continuation of events after “Mass Effect 3”.
