Ubisoft’s recent experiment in NFTs has proven a bit of a disaster at launch.
Kotaku and Eurogamer report that a grand total of 15 NFTs, which they dub ‘Digits’ and are part of the new ‘Ubisoft Quartz’ experience, have been sold between two marketplaces which equates to a little under $2000 U.S. dollars in transactions.
“Apex Legends” senior character artist Liz Edwards first spotted the numbers and aptly summed it up in a tweet: “Am I understanding this right? Ubisoft managed to make an NFT that not even NFT fans want? because that is very very very funny.”
There are, however, reasons for this. Quartz is designed so that only those who play Ubisoft’s games can purchase an NFT which stops those hoping to re-sell and make quick money from these digital goods.
In addition, these first NFTs are tied to the widely panned “Ghost Recon Breakpoint” game and require several hundred hours of playtime in some cases to obtain. For now, the purchases have seemed to all be an in-game gun skin cosmetic within the game.
This follows in the wake of “S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2” developers GSC Game World who recently announced and then quickly cancelled plans for NFTs.
