Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is sticking with the hard sci-fi genre for his post “Dune: Part Two” effort with the news today he’ll helm a film adaptation of “2001” author Arthur C. Clarke’s novel “Rendezvous With Rama”.

The title should sound familiar. A film adaptation has been in the works for nearly two decades with David Fincher long attached to the project back in the 2000s.

The project previously resided at Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment which will produce alongside Alcon Entertainment who will finance and has worked with Villeneuve on “Prisoners” and “Blade Runner 2049”.

The story is set in the 2130s and follows the investigation of a thirty-mile-long alien spaceship with mysterious origins that has been set adrift in our Solar System by an unknown intelligence.

We follow a group of human explorers who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries and make humanity’s first contact with an alien species. McCreery, Freeman, Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce.
