In the wake of the release of the “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” trailer, one topic of discussion that has come up has been about the online thirst over Idris Elba playing Knuckles in the movie.
A former Sexiest Man Alive, Elba previously told Screen Rant that his goal with his voice for the red echidna character wasn’t to make him an object of desire: “Contractually, I cannot say anything. But I wouldn’t say he was sexy. I don’t think I’m going for that. That’s for sure.”
He may not have been aiming for it, but it has happened nonetheless with the reaction enough that the film’s director has weighed in on the audience’s reaction and is having a blast with it. He tells Polygon:
Let me just say that the fact that [the sexy voice debate] resurfaced in the last 24 hours. Everyone saying that he lied makes me so happy. Big smile on my face. I don’t think anyone saw that conversation or dialogue happening, but here it is, and I’m glad it’s here. He’s such a great guy. He really wants to get the character right.
The new film seems to draw elements from the third game in 1994 which will see Sonic and Knuckles battle it out (initially) while Dr. Robotnik pursues the Master Emerald.
