Move over loot boxes, microtransactions, and broken-at-launch titles that need months of updates – it looks like there’s new competition to draw the ire of gamers in the form of NFTs.

Ubisoft has announced that NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are coming to their Tom Clancy franchise title “Ghost Recon Breakpoint” as unique, collectible, in-game cosmetics – the first NFTs to be playable in an AAA game.

Branding them ‘Digits’ and launching the platform Ubisoft Quartz to manage the acquisition of said Digits, the game publisher is reportedly implementing these NFTs as an experiment.

In a launch video, they’ve targeted one area of concern in regards to NFTs and other forms of cryptographic assets and cryptocurrency – namely their environmental impact. The company dubs this system as being both energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Ubisoft’s Digits, which will be stored on the Tezos blockchain, will first be introduced to Breakpoint’s Windows PC versions via the Ubisoft Connect platform. The platform’s launch kicks off this afternoon U.S. time.

So far however, the video doesn’t appear to have many fans. While the dislike button is no longer a publicly visible part of YouTube, a report at Kotaku indicates users are still able to view YouTube dislikes via a number of ways. At the time of posting through those methods, the clip reportedly had 1000 likes and 24,000 dislikes – a 96% dislike ratio.
