Disney’s new animated family film “Encanto” topped the pre-Thanksgiving Wednesday box office, taking in $7.5 million in its first full day of release.
That came out ahead of the other two new competitors – Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” with $4.2 million, and Sony’s “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” with $2.5 million. Meanwhile last week’s No. 1 “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” came in second on Wednesday with $5.4 million.
“Encanto” is also the only one with great reviews, the movie sitting on 92% (7.6/10) with critics on Rotten Tomatoes while the audience score is even higher at 95%.
In comparison, ‘Gucci’ sits at a more mixed 61% (6.1/10) while the new ‘Resident’ has pulled in a 28% (5.1/10) score which is on par with the various forgettable sequels of the prior Milla Jovovich-led film series.
“Encanto” is expected to top the holiday box office and generate $35-40 million over the five-day period while ‘Gucci’ is tracking for $20 million and ‘Resident’ for $15 million.
