As part of International Men’s Day, British Conservative Party MP Nick Fletcher made some eyebrow-raising comments during a Westminster debate.
According to Deadline, Fletcher says there appears to be a: “call from a tiny, but very vocal, minority that every male character or good role model must have a female replacement.”
Citing discussion over the next James Bond along with “Doctor Who,” “Ghostbusters,” “Star Wars” and “The Equalizer,” he then goes on to say this shift has left young men with fewer screen role models and so they are looking up to more nefarious characters like Cillian Murphy’s “Peaky Blinders” gang leader character Tommy Shelby.
He then goes on to add: “is there any wonder we are seeing so many young men committing crime?”. The comments reportedly baffled others at the debate with the Chairperson believing that she must have misheard him.
The comments have also already led to memes online such as one with Jodie Whittaker’s smiling The Doctor and the caption ‘Do Crimes’.
