Aside from the footage from “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2,” the other big hit of the recent Nintendo E3 presentation was the reveal of 2D scroller “Metroid Dread”.
Of course, fans had been hoping for news on the “Metroid Prime 4” front. That game was announced in 2017, but then in 2019 the company said they had restarted development on that title. People hoped there would be an update this year, but there was no mention.
Four years might seem long, but the “Metroid Dread” game we’re getting makes the other one’s delays seem like nothing as VGC and Slate have done reports indicating that ‘Dread’ was originally in early development over sixteen years ago, conceived as a scrolling sequel to “Metroid Fusion” for the Nintendo DS.
However the project stalled. Officially it seemed to be cancelled, while at the studio it didn’t progress for years despite several attempts to get it going. The main reason was the technology simply wasn’t there to bring it to life until recently with them now collaborating with Mercury Steam (“Samus Returns”). The new version reportedly surpasses the vision they originally had all those years ago.
“Metroid Dread” will mark the first new, 2D game in Metroid’s mainline series in nearly two decades. The game arrives in stores for the Nintendo Switch on October 8th.
