EA and DICE have revealed “Battlefield 2042,” the latest entry in the popular game franchise which this time shifts the action to the near future.
Following on from 2016’s WW1-set “Battlefield 1” and 2018’s WW2-set “Battlefield V,” the new title ditches the period stories for a multiplayer-only title set in a future collapsing thanks to catastrophic environmental damage, destructive technology and the greatest refugee crisis in human history.
Tornadoes are a gameplay element this time around, as are wingsuits, jets, ATVs, choppers and all sorts of crazy physics-defying action that feels more akin to a “Just Cause” game albeit with the serious tone of the previous entries of this franchise.
There are three modes: “All-Out Warfare” which sees matches that can be filled with up to 128 players on the new-generation consoles and PCs, but are limited to 64 on the older consoles. “Hazard Zone” which is a squad-based game mode, but NOT a Battle Royale mode. The third is being unveiled during EA Play Live on July 22nd. There are also seven maps: Sogdo, South Korea; Alang, India; Kourou, French Guiana; Doha, Qatar; Brani Island, Singapore; Eastern Desert, Egypt and Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
The five-minute clip comes ahead of a gameplay reveal trailer which will arrive this Sunday as part of Microsoft’s presentation for the E3 convention. The game itself is expected to debut on October 22nd on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC.
