Disney Pictures is reportedly already in early development on a sequel to this year’s “Cruella,” a live-action 1970s UK-set prequel to “101 Dalmatians”.

The first film’s director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are expected to return for the sequel. No word as yet on Emma Stone reprising her role as villainess Cruella de Vil role.

The first film debuted last Friday simultaneously in cinemas and on Disney+ as a Premier Access title. It has scored quite positive reviews from critics and gushingly good ones from audiences to date, making it one of the best-reviewed of Disney’s live-action adaptations so far. In a statement, a Disney rep says:

“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date. The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

The movie has earned $48.5 million globally to date. Gillespie recently spoke with Collider about sequel possibilities and said he would “love to now see the full-blown Cruella, fully loaded.”
