Ahead of Denis Villeneuve’s new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s “Dune” arriving in cinemas, David Lynch’s prior 1984 feature adaptation has been announced as arriving on 4K UHD Blu-ray on August 31st via Arrow Video.
The new release contains the film in 4K and in Dolby Vision HDR. It also boasts original uncompressed stereo audio and DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround audio.
There’s a ton of extras including a new commentary track with film historian Paul M. Sammon, a new commentary track by Mike White of The Projection Booth podcast, the 1983 featurette “Destination Dune” designed to promote the movie, the 2003 documentary “Impressions of Dune,” eleven deleted scenes, several 2005 featurettes on the design and visual effects, film trailers, and still galleries.
That’s just the first disc. The second contains the new feature-length documentary “The Sleeper Must Awaken: Making Dune” by Ballyhoo Motion Pictures exploring the making of the film, new featurettes about the film’s merchandising and score, a new interview with make-up effects artist Giannetto de Rossi, and archival interviews with various key crew.
Two versions of the release will exist. The standard ‘Limited Edition’ with sandworm packaging, and a ‘Deluxe Limited Edition’ with original theatrical artwork. The latter includes a third disc with the film on standard Blu-ray, a Steelbook cover, a 100-page perfect-bound book with original concepts and designs, a 60-page perfect-bound book featuring new writing on the film, a large fold-out double-sided poster featuring original theatrical poster artwork, and six double-sided lobby card reproductions.
The new discs arrive ahead of the new “Dune” which comes to cinemas and HBO Max on October 1st.
