Hot on the heels of the project’s reveal yesterday, it has now been confirmed that Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux are to play the leads in David Cronenberg’s next directorial effort “Crimes of the Future”.
The project boasts the same name as one of his first features and marks not only his first directing project in seven years but also his first original screenplay since 1999’s “eXistenZ”.
While the title may be the same, the official synopsis sounds quite different to that early film although is very much in line with the sci-fi body horror stylings the Canadian filmmaker made his name on from “The Fly” to “Dead Ringers”.
The story is set in the not-so-distant future where humankind is learning to adapt to its synthetic surroundings, causing human evolution to metamorphose with ‘Accelerated Evolution Syndrome’ (AES) spreading fast.
While some embrace the limitless potential of transhumanism, others attempt to police it. Saul Tenser is a performance artist who has embraced AES, sprouting new and unexpected organs in his body.
Tenser has turned the removal of these organs into a real-time theatre spectacle. But with both the government and a strange subculture watching him, Tenser is forced to consider what would be his most shocking performance of all.
Scott Speedman, Welket Bungue, Don McKellar and Lihi Kornowski will also star while Robert Lantos will produce. Filming is slated to begin in Greece in August and NEON will distribute the film in the United States.
