“Nomadland” Sweeps The Spirit Awards

The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards, the last honors before this Sunday’s Academy Awards, kept up the momentum for Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland”.

The Frances McDormand-led picture took multiple awards including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

However the movie found itself in heavy competition with “Promising Young Woman” which took Best Actress and Best Screenplay, along with “Sound of Metal” which won Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best First Feature.

Other winners included Best Supporting Actress for “Minari,” Best Documentary for “Crip Camp,” Best First Screenplay for “Palm Springs,” Best International Film for “Quo Vadis, Aida?,” the Robert Altman award handed out to “One Night in Miami” and the John Cassavetes award handed out to “Residue”.

On the TV front, “I May Destroy You” took Best Ensemble Cast & Best New Scripted Series, “Immigration Nation” won Best Documentary Series, and “Unorthodox” stars Amit Rahav and Shira Haas won Best Actor and Actress in a scripted series.
