Starz Snags Esmail’s “Gaslit” As Two Exit

Starz has picked up the Watergate drama series “Gaslit” which hails from “Mr. Robot” and “Homecoming” creator Sam Esmail.

Based on Slate’s Slow Burn podcast, the UCP-produced project starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. Roberts plays Martha Mitchell, a celebrity Arkansan socialite and wife to Nixon’s loyal but foulmouthed and ruthless Attorney General John Mitchell (Penn).

Despite her party affiliation, she is the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate – causing both the Presidency and her personal life to unravel.

Joel Edgerton was set to star as G. Gordon Liddy and direct but is no longer attached – both he and his brother Nash Edgerton dropping out. Armie Hammer was also originally attached to the role of White House Counsel John Dean but exited a while back.

Matt Ross (“Captain Fantastic”) will now direct and executive produce. Robbie Pickering (“Search Party”) remains as showrunner and shooting will begin this Spring. Esmail, Roberts, Pickering and Chad Hamilton executive produce.
