HBO Max’s upcoming animated family series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is filling out its voice cast with some truly remarkable talent.
Set in 1920s Shanghai, the prequel series will include the voice talents of Ming-Na Wen (“The Mandalorian,” “Mulan”), BD Wong (“Gotham,” “Jurassic World”) and James Hong (“Blade Runner,” “Big Trouble in Little China”).
Matthew Rhys (“The Americans,” “Perry Mason”) has also joined the cast in the role of the show’s villain – the power-hungry industrialist, treasure hunter and ruthless black magic conjurer Riley Greene who also has a growing army of gremlins.
Warner Bros. Animation and Amblin Television are backing the ten episodes which have been greenlit and will follow ten-year-old Sam Wing (the future mysterious Chinatown shopkeep Mr. Wing in the 1984 Chris Columbus movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore on a quest to return Gizmo to his family.
Izaac Wang will play Sam Wing with Wen and Wong playing his parents and Hong playing his grandfather. A.J. LoCascio voices Gizmo, and Gabrielle Green voices Sam’s friend Elle.
Showrunner Tze Chun will write and serve as a co-executive producer. “Animaniacs” trio Sam Register, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce.
