Lee Daniels To Produce Spy Drama “Spook”

Filmmaker and “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels is attached to executive produce the spy drama series “The Spook Who Sat by the Door” which has been ordered to pilot at FX.

Based on Sam Greenlee’s novel and the 1973 film adaptation of the same name, the tale explores the fictional story of Dan Freeman – the first Black CIA officer hired by the agency in the late 1960s.

Recruited as part of an affirmative action program, he followed a training process and was “left by the door” as a token of the CIA’s “racial equality.”

Leigh Dana Jackson (“Raising Dion,” “Foundation”) penned the script and will serve as showrunner. Gerard McMurray will executive produce and direct the pilot. Marc Velez will also executive produce.
