Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions has revealed a new slate of projects which have been set-up at Netflix.
The first is one already announced – the feature film “Exit West” starring Riz Ahmed and based on Mohsin Hamid’s acclaimed novel with Yann Demange directing.
“Firekeeper’s Daughter” is a young adult TV series based on Angeline Boulley’s novel about an 18-year-old Native girl who reluctantly goes undercover in a police investigation on her Ojibwe reservation. Mickey Fisher will serve as showrunner and co-write with Wenonah Wilms.
“Great National” Parks is a natural history series exploring the awe-inducing national parks and wild spaces around the world. Higher Ground, Wild Space Productions and James Honeyborne produce.
“Satellite” is a sci-fi feature which Ola Shokunbi is writing and which Kiri Hart and Stephen Feder will produce for Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T Street.
Tayarisha Poe’s feature “The Young Wife” follows 29-year-old Celestina on the day of her first wedding – or not exactly a wedding, but a party where she feels out of sync.
Finally, there’s “Tenzing,” a biopic about the life of Tenzing Norgay – the first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary. Jennifer Peedom (“Sherpa”) directs while Luke Davies (“Lion”) wrote the script.
The projects are all in various stages of development and will be released over the next several years.
