Following its fifth season finale this week, the critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller “The Expanse” still has a sixth and final season on the way.

The show is produced by Alcon Entertainment and found a large audience on the Amazon Prime SVOD service. However, it famously had a linear-only rights deal at Syfy which ended after three seasons and saw the show then cancelled before Amazon brought it back.

When the sixth season was announced as the show’s last, executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson indicated there could be more story to tell in this universe.

This week, as part of an episode of Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Alcon’s Johnson elaborated on that and suggests it’s simply a waiting game until rights fall back under full Alcon control:

“Once the show is done on Amazon and has aired for a handful of years, all the episodes come back and are part of our library. We own the underlying IP for interactive, graphic novels, continuing storytelling in features… It’s such a rich world. We’re considering all kinds of interesting possibilities.”

Filming on the sixth season began last week and is expected to continue through late April.
