Some brief updates today on two high-profile sequels on the way. First, filmmaker Sam Hargrave has confirmed that shooting on a follow-up to his hit Netflix action film “Extraction” aims to start this Fall, though the ongoing pandemic means things could change.
In the April 2020 release, Chris Hemsworth starred as Australian mercenary Tyler Rake, a broken man with nothing to lose hired to rescue a young boy who has become the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords.
Speaking with Collider recently, Hargrave confirmed the Fall start date is still on track with Hemsworth to shoot the film sometime after he wraps Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder” which begins production this week in Sydney:
“[That’s] still the case, COVID-pending. That’s kind of everyone’s little caveat right now, but we’re moving forward on it as if we’re shooting in the fall. Joe [Russo] is still finalizing the script. We’re all excited to read it. I’ve read different iterations, but I’m excited to read what he turns in. We’re all looking forward to getting back in the saddle and hopefully bringing another action-packed adventure in the ‘Extraction’ universe.”
Also today, those involved in the “John Wick” franchise are itching to get to work on the fourth film in the series, but plans are presently still on hold for the films.
Ian McShane, who plays Continental Hotel owner Winston in the films, spoke with Collider and said little has changed and they hope to go into production as soon as they can later this year:
“Keanu [Reeves] and I exchanged New Year’s greetings and said, ‘Hope to see you this year.’ I know the script is being written and they’re hoping to do it this year. I know they announced they were gonna do [‘John Wick 4’] and [‘John Wick 5’] together, but who knows. The studios announce all sorts of things. No doubt, at some point this year, we’re gonna do ‘John Wick 4’.”
At present, the film’s release date is still scheduled for May 27th 2022, though whether that will still hold is unclear.
