Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, who helmed the celebrated Cannes premiering feature “Beanpole,” has been tapped to direct the pilot for the HBO series adaptation of celebrated video game “The Last of Us”.

Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO’s acclaimed limited series “Chernobyl,” is writing and executive producing alongside the game’s writer and creative director Neil Druckmann.

The series is set two decades after a fungal pandemic has destroyed modern civilization. The story centers on the relationship between a hardened survivor named Joel and a teenager named Ellie, who may be the key to a cure.

Joel is hired to smuggle the fourteen-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as they traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Initially, it seemed “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck was going to direct, but he has had to drop out because of a scheduling conflict. Carolyn Strauss, Evan Wells, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan executive produce.
