Media player Roku has announced that they have reached 51.2 million active global accounts by the end of 2020 – up from 36.9 million in 2019.
Both Roku and Amazon are effectively the gatekeepers of streaming to TVs in the U.S. with Amazon reaching 50 million active users globally on its Fire TV streaming platform as of last month.
One key difference though is reach. Roku is almost entirely North America-based whereas Amazon’s main rival outside the United States is the Apple TV box which had sold 53 million units as of last year.
Roku also says its preliminary estimated data indicates 58.7 billion hours of content were streamed on its service in 2020 – a 55% year-over-year surge.
