Hot on the heels of HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” comes another prestige historical fantasy series dealing with monsters and racism in early-mid 20th century America.
Skydance Television has acquired the rights to P. Djeli Clark’s novella “Ring Shout” with plans to turn it into a TV series. KiKi Layne (“The Old Guard”) is attached to star while Kasi Lemmons (“Harriet”) is attached to write, direct, and serve as showrunner.
The story follows an otherworldly evil that has risen in the 1920s South in the form of monsters who take up residence within the bodies of people filled with hate – namely the Ku Klux Klan.
As D.W. Griffith’s “Birth of a Nation” is helping to swell the Klan’s ranks and the monsters are drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of racism, a young Black woman with a mysterious past named Maryse Boudreaux (Layne) sets out to send the Klan’s demons straight to Hell.
Armed with munitions and helped by two friends and fellow resistance fighters, a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter, they take on the fight even as something bigger is brewing.
Lemmons and Layne will executive produce along with Clark, Marc Evans, Matt Jackson, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost.
