Sophia Loren’s return to film with the movie “The Life Ahead” has proven a massive success on Netflix.
In the film Loren plays Madame Rosa who now takes care of children of women she used to work the streets with. When one boy, Momo steals a pair of candlesticks from her, the two soon form a life-changing relationship.
According to the streamer, the Italian language film has hit the top ten of all Netflix offerings ever in just its first week alone in 37 countries including the U.S., Italy, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Greece, France, and Brazil among others.
For the actress it is, by far, the biggest opening of any of her films and the widest reach to date. In addition the film has scored major critical acclaim and is generating Oscar buzz for Loren who won in 1961 and was last nominated in 1964.
Loren’s son Edoardo Ponti helmed the film and of its success, she says: “The fact that it has touched the hearts and souls of so many people around the world fills me with immense gratitude and great pride for Italian cinema.”
