“Unhinged” Debuts To $4M Over Weekend

The Russell Crowe-led road rage thriller “Unhinged,” the first movie to open nationwide since the coronavirus pandemic hit in March, opened to a domestic debut of $4 million in the United States over the weekend.

The film played in roughly 1,823 theaters and its number is considered a win with even rival Hollywood studios executives reportedly pleased by the results. That comes on top of the fact cinemas remain dark in several key states including California and New York.

Reviews for the movie were mixed, often praising Crowe but had issues with the rest of the film around him. “Unhinged” will expand from 1,823 cinemas to more than 2,300 next weekend as more theaters reopen.

Solstice Studios expects the film to hit $8 million in its first week and ultimately $30 million domestically, the movie has already earned over $8 million overseas.

China is the big box office story of the week though where local tentpole “The Eight Hundred” opened to a staggering $107 million, including weekday previews, even with capacity capped at 30-50% across the Middle Kingdom.
