Keira Knightley has signed on to star in and executive produce the drama series “The Essex Serpent” for the Apple TV+ streaming service.
A series order for the project has been handed out with Anna Symon (“Mrs. Wilson”) to serve as the lead writer, and Clio Barnard (“Dark River”) set to direct.
Based on Sarah Perry’s British Book Award-winning novel, Knightley plays a woman named Cora who has been released from an abusive marriage.
She relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area.
Knightley, Symon, Barnard, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman executive produce.
The project marks her second commitment to a streaming TV series in the past few months, the other being Hulu’s adaptation of Suzanne Rindell’s novel “The Other Typist”.
