Angela Bassett, Joe Morton, Courtney B. Vance, Phylicia Rashad and Oprah Winfrey are set to star in a special adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ 2015 novel “Between The World and Me” for HBO.
The book is written as a letter to Coates’ teenage son and recounts the author’s experiences growing up in Baltimore’s inner city and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community. The narrative explores Coates’ notion that American society structurally supports white supremacy.
Originally adapted and staged by the Apollo Theater in 2018, the special will combine elements of that production, including powerful readings from Coates’ book, and will once again be directed by Kamilah Forbes.
Alicia Garza, Tariq ‘Black Thought’ Trotter, Pauletta Washington and Susan Kelechi Watson also star in the project which Watson is executive producing. HBO will also make a charitable donation to Howard University and the Apollo Theater.
The special will be produced under COVID-19 guidelines and will be available on HBO and HBO Max.
