Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, Shakim Compere and Holly Carter are set to executive produce “Mahalia!,” a new film about the life of civil rights activist and gospel singer Mahalia Jackson.
Three-time Grammy Award-winner Jill Scott will play the lead role in the film based on Darlene Donloe’s biography. Jackson was the first gospel artist to sing at Carnegie Hall and worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy on social initiatives.
The team has also secured the rights to use Jackson’s entire musical catalog in the film, including “How I Got Over,” “Go Tell It On The Mountain” and “Amazing Grace.”
Richard Hocutt, Mark Gould and Tricia Woodgett penned the script.
