Four new major SVOD services have arrived in the past nine months – Disney+ and Apple TV+ in November last year, HBO Max in May and Peacock last month.
A new report out from third-party measurement firm Parrot Analytics has found that, unsurprisingly, only one launch series on any of these services has driven serious demand – “The Mandalorian” on Disney+.
The firm measured how demand for the new original shows stacked up against average demand for U.S. TV shows during that period of time. “The Mandalorian” was in a class of its own and was “more than 55 times higher than the average TV series during that same week.”
It’s the runners up however where things get more neck and neck. Disney+ also had the second place getter with the final season of “Star Wars The Clone Wars,” followed closely by “For all Mankind,” “Dickinson” and “See” on Apple TV+ and the “Looney Tunes Cartoons” revival on HBO Max.
Stepping a bit further down was Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Peacock’s “Brave New World” and “Curious George”.
All these new entrants are still chasing Netflix with nearly 193 million subscribers, though Disney is making strong headway with over 60 million for the Disney+ service alone and a number pushing just above 100 million once Hulu and ESPN+ are incorporated.
