Plenty of video games allow you to customise your character from selecting a gender to adjusting their physical attributes down to some extreme detail.
One key point though is that almost all require the user to settle on the design they like before they begin the game. A small handful allow you to change one or two small attributes like hair during the campaign, but for the most part you’re stuck with what you selected from the beginning.
That changes with the upcoming “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla”. While 2018’s previous entry “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” finally brought the ability to choose the gender of your character years after games like “Mass Effect” and “Dragon Age” boasted the same feature, the new title delivers something new.
Specifically game director Eric Baptizat has confirmed that you will be able to change protagonist Eivor’s gender at will so you won’t be locked into a decision at the beginning of the game. Baptizat tells GamesRadar:
“You can decide to play male or female, [but] you are allowed to change, at any time, your skill tree or the gender of your character – you can swap at any time. It was important to make this option available for the player. It’s something that the player can decide for the way they want to play, because it has some impact on the narrative – but it’s not two different stories. It’s the same story of the character – whatever options your character decides.”
‘Valhalla’ releases this November and is expected to arrive on all consoles including the upcoming PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
