Rather than falling back on formula, the developers of “Watch Dogs: Legion” came up with an incredibly ambitious idea – an open-world game populated by plenty of people, and effectively no non-playable characters (NPC).
This near-future, dystopian London set entry continues the story set in another city utilising an operating system called CTOS which unifies everything networked from consumer products to larger urban infrastructure like electrical grids and traffic control systems.
Things change up though as a series of bombings has led to the role of maintaining order in the city being handed over to a private military contractor who has turned London into a technofascist surveillance state.
The key selling point is you don’t play just one operative fighting against this oppressive regime. You can, in fact, recruit just about any civilian you encounter in the world to do so with each person having their own skills and back story.
Two videos for the game released by Ubisoft highlight this. The first shows gameplay and how different people can approach the same missions differently – from Guy Ritchie film-style bruisers to John Wick-esque hitmen to tech experts controlling drones. You can approach missions in multiple ways and using various approaches.
The second is more of a cinematic trailer setting up the game’s big bad and the situation that has driven the citizenry to their actions. “Watch Dogs: Legion” arrives on consoles and PC on October 29th.
