“Kangaroo Jack” Co-Writer Steve Bing Dead

Writer, producer and philanthropist Steve Bing has died by suicide in Los Angeles following a battle with depression. He was 55.

Police and the coroner’s office said a man fitting his age jumped from a Century City apartment building on Monday with his identity confirmed on Tuesday.

Bing, who inherited a fortune of some $600 million from his L.A. real estate developer grandfather, quit Stanford and got into the film business. He’d already brushed with it, creating the story for the Chuck Norris “MIssing in Action” films whilst still a high school student at Harvard-Westlake.

Bing co-wrote the comedy “Kangaroo Jack,” had a major investment in “The Polar Express,” penned an episode of “Married With Children,” and served as producer on numerous films including “Rock the Kasbah,” “Beowulf,” “Rules Don’t Apply,” “Girl Walks Into a Bar,” “Shine a Light” and the “Get Carter” remake.

The contributor to progressive causes and Hollywood producer spent much of his life living in hotels and was known for his partying lifestyle and celebrity friends. He’s survived by children via actress Elizabeth Hurley and tennis player Lisa Bonder.
