Netflix has confirmed today, exactly twenty years to the day since its release, Aardman Animation is at work developing a sequel to Nick Park’s stop-motion animated classic “Chicken Run”.
Production is set to begin next year on the project which will be released by Netflix worldwide except for China. The streaming giant snatched up the rights from both Studiocanal and Pathe.
Mel Gibson and Julia Sawalha led the voice cast of the original about the escape efforts of a group of chickens, bidding to flee the clutches of Mrs Tweedy before she converts her farm into a chicken pot pie factory.
The story finds the surviving birds now living in a human-free sanctuary, having hatched a little girl called Molly. But when the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat, they put their hard-won freedom at risk to save their species.
Sam Fell directs, while Peter Lord, Carla Shelley and Karey Kirkpatrick are executive producers. Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’ Farrell and Rachel Tunnard scripted the new film.
Along with acclaim, “Chicken Run” became the highest-grossing stop-motion animation film of all-time when it premiered. The film also secured BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations.
