The Hollywood Foreign Press Association have announced a new rule which appears to be partly in reaction to actor Pedro Pascal’s work as the titular masked bounty hunter on the Disney+ streaming service “The Mandalorian”.
The group announced on Wednesday that “voice-only performances are not eligible in any acting category”. As a result, even if characters are physically in the scene then any actor whose face is not visible is not eligible in any acting category.
Pascal was in costume and hidden under a helmet throughout the show’s eight-episode first season bar one scene in the season finale (which actually makes him eligible). Though not nominated for a Globe last year, the nature of his eligibility has lead to this clarification.
The HFPA has also added the term ‘anthology’ to its limited series/TV movie category names which would include shows like “Black Mirror” and “Modern Love”. A date for the 2021 Golden Globes has not been announced but Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are set to return as co-hosts.
