“Call Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria” helmer Luca Guadagnino has been tapped to direct the new iteration of “Scarface” for Universal Pictures.
Joel Coen and Ethan Coen wrote the latest version of the script, taking over from earlier drafts by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Jonathan Herman and Paul Attanasio.
The new version will be set in present day Los Angeles, a far cry from Howard Hawks’ 1932 Chicago-set original and Brian DePalma’s 1983 Miami-set remake with Al Pacino.
Several filmmaker including David Ayer and Antoine Fuqua have circled the project in the past but the involvement of both the Coens and Guadagnino marks a big upgrade. Dylan Clark will produce.
