Quick News: Cannes, Day, Lionsgate, Kombat

2020 Cannes Film Festival
France president Emmanuel Macron said the local lockdown will be extended to May 11th in a televised interview on Monday, and added that no festivals or events drawing large crowds will be allowed to take place until at least mid-July – putting the final nail in the coffin of the Cannes Film Festival for this year as organisers had planned to postpone the festival to late June/early July. Cannes organizers have yet to comment on the declaration. [Source: Variety]

Singles Day
New Line has set “Plus One” filmmaking duo of director Jeff Chan and producer Andrew Rhymer for the romantic comedy “Singles Day”. Chan will direct while Rhymer, Chris Bender and Jake Weiner produce.

Lillian Yu penned the original spec script which is centered on the Chinese anti-Valentine’s Day holiday that takes place on November 11th. The interconnected ensemble of romantic partners, friends and family will be predominantly of Asian descent. [Source: THR]

Lionsgate Live
Lionsgate has announced “Lionsgate Live! A Night at the Movies,” a special program that reminds everyone of the communal cinema experience. Taking place across four consecutive Fridays starting this week, the studio will offer free movies streaming live on Lionsgate’s YouTube page and Fandango’s Movieclips YouTube page.

Hosted by Jamie Lee Curtis, she will be joined by special guest celebrities and YouTube personalities, each week’s night at the movies will feature special programming and interactive opportunities for fans. The movies include “The Hunger Games” (Apr 17), “Dirty Dancing” (Apr 24), “La La Land” (May 1) and “John Wick” (May 8). [Source: Lionsgate]

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has unveiled a new clip from the animated feature “Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge” showing Liu Kang questioning the recruits Raiden has gathered. In addition, the studio has set up special online events with lead cast member Patrick Seitz and special panelists for the film – starting with a community viewing party today at 3pm US-PST on the Mortal Kombat YouTube channel.
