Many wondered how Disney’s squeaky clean family-friendly image would carry over to its Disney+ streaming service and how they would deal with their own classic and more adult-focused Touchstone Pictures titles. The answer seemed to be to keep the non-kiddie stuff set aside for Hulu, though there have been exceptions such as “Splash”.
Ron Howard’s 1980s rom-com feature follows a man (Tom Hanks) who finds himself falling in love with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah). The film scored a PG rating when it was released back in 1984 and is an extremely tame affair throughout which makes it perfectly fine for the Disney+ service.
There is one scene though that Disney deemed inappropriate and rather than edit it out, they’ve turned to some decidedly dodgy digital effects to cover it up. In the beach-set scene, Hannah’s mermaid character introduces herself to Tom Hanks, kisses him and runs off to the ocean, diving in and swimming away. As she runs, her bare bottom can be vaguely seen under her flowing hair.
The Disney+ version however has decided to add some more digital hair to Hannah’s character to fully cover her bottom. The problem? Beyond the obvious censorship, they’ve done a poor job of it – looking like an early draft of the “Cats” fur simulation technology.
This follows on from Disney inexplicable changing of the Greedo scene yet again in the original “Star Wars” film for Disney+ which, in the process, launched thousands of memes. The question is, what else out there has been altered and remains yet to be discovered.
