“Star Wars” alum John Boyega and his UpperRoom Productions company have signed a multi-year deal with Netflix with a specific focus on non-English language films from both West and East Africa.
Three features are included in the deal – one from Egypt and two from Nigeria. UpperRoom is also developing projects based on African IP such as literary properties, Nollywood classics, screenplays and mythology.
Netflix debuted its first African original feature “Queen Sono” last month. Boyega and Yara Shaikh formed the company to produce content reflecting their own respective Nigerian and Sudanese heritages.
