Netflix Picks Up Comedy “Cocaine Hippos”

Netflix has picked up the comedy “Cocaine Hippos” with comedian Jermaine Fowler (“Superior Donuts”) set to star.

Jordan VanDina is penning the script in a story inspired by hippopotamuses that were brought into Colombia from Africa in the 1980s to populate Pablo Escobar’s estate.

When he was killed in 1993, his menagerie went to zoos or were sold off. The exception were the hippos who were left to their own devices, but soon they quickly populated and became an invasive species.

The film is said to have a “Tropic Thunder” tone and will follow a group of friends who stumble across a clue leading to Escobar’s lost treasure. They set out on a wild trip that pits them against con men, local drug lords and the deadly hippos.

Fowler, Adam Goodman and Matt Skiena produce.
