NBC’s biggest local affiliate groups like Nexstar, Tegna, Hearst, Gray Television and Sinclair are opting out of airing the “30 Rock” special this Thursday night – a group sizeable enough that at least half the country won’t get to see it on NBC.
The special was produced in part by NBCU’s ad sales division. It, in part, serves as an upfront pitch to advertisers and highlights the larger company’s assets including the Peacock streaming service launching tomorrow. The special also won’t feature traditional ad breaks.
It’s that focus on Peacock that’s the issue however. Affiliates are not pleased with the service which could siphon viewers from linear TV. In addition the decision to stream episodes of Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers’ talk shows on Peacock a couple hours ahead of their over-the-air broadcasts is causing friction.
NBC’s owned-and-operated stations, covering 40% of the population including most of the biggest markets, will air the special. It will also be available Friday on Peacock and NBC’s website and app, while cable channels USA, Bravo, Syfy and CNBC will all air the special Friday night.
