The 93rd Academy Awards aren’t scheduled to take place until February 28th, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is reportedly considering postponing the Oscars.
Anonymous sources for Variety say definitive plans are far from being concrete at this point, but say: “it’s likely they’ll be postponed.” That person cautioned that details, including potential new dates, have not been fully discussed or formally proposed as yet and so the date at ABC is currently unchanged.
Temporary rule changes for Oscar eligibility were announced in April because of COVID-19, allowing Oscar-qualifying theatrical runs to take place across numerous cities and even VOD under certain circumstances.
A big question is if the Academy will allow films released after the year-end deadline to qualify for the 2021 Oscars. If so, it could mean some awards fare could end up screening in the usually barren first quarter of the year.
