2019’s Five Biggest Box-Office Bombs

As part of its annual film revenue tournaments, Deadline has published a list of last year’s biggest bombs in terms of losses for the studio.

Leading the list is Simon Kinberg’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” which cost 20th Century Studios and Disney a loss of approximately $133 million – no surprise with the film drawing the lowest scores ever for the franchise along with making just $252 million from a $200 million budget.

Next was Tim Miller’s “Terminator: Dark Fate” with a loss of $122 million. Despite better reviews than the last few sequels, the still only decently scoring film wasn’t considered good enough and generated $261 million from a $190 million budget – just over half the gross of its immediate predecessor ‘Genisys’ despite that film’s lackluster reviews.

Third was Tom Hooper’s “Cats,” the film musical which lost $113 million and scarred millions of pscyhes. With a budget in the $80 – 100 million range, it grossed just $75.4 million along with drawing some utterly scathing critical reviews.

Fourth was Ang Lee’s “Gemini Man,” the film which had long been circulating Hollywood finally got made and cost the studio approximately $111 million. Costing $138 million to make, the film pulled in just $173.5 million worldwide and was subjected to some bad reviews. It proved a rare failed blockbuster film for Smith.

Fifth is celebrated animation house Laika’s adventure tale “Missing Link”. It scored rave reviews and won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, but its loses of $101 million are near equal to its production budget size. Part of that is thought to be due to the film being released through the United Artists Releasing as opposed to Laika’s traditional partner Focus Features, which saw it snag just $26 million in box-office worldwide.
