Sunday’s premiere of the “Yellowstone” prequel series “1883” set a new record for ViacomCBS’ Paramount+ streaming platform.

According to the company, the show had the most-watched original series premiere – more than doubling the previous viewership record.

While they didn’t provide any ratings data, Nielsen’s ratings for the episode’s airing on Paramount Network would seem to agree with that assessment as the linear telecast drew a strong 4.9 million total viewers in Live+Same Day ratings.

That’s the biggest new series premiere on cable since AMC’s “Into the Badlands” in 2015. The series also held onto 65% of its “Yellowstone” lead-in (7.5 million viewers), compared to the 35% for Taylor Sheridan’s other recent series premiere “The Mayor Of Kingstown” (2.6 million viewers).

Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Bob Thornton, Isabel May and LaMonica Garrett star in the series which follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America – Montana.
