Ridley Scott Keen On A “Gladiator” Sequel

Appearing at SXSW this week to show off footage from this May’s “Alien Covenant,” director Ridley Scott revealed that he has a great idea for bringing Russell Crowe’s Maximus back to life for a sequel to 2000’s “Gladiator”.

Scott confirms to EW he’s been wanting to do the sequel for a while and definitely wants Russell Crowe back if Crowe decides it’s something he’d do. The character famous dies at the end of the first film, but Scott seems to think that won’t be a problem:

“I know how to bring him back. I was having this talk with the studio, ‘but he’s dead.’ But there is a way of bringing him back. Whether it will happen I don’t know. Gladiator was 2000, so Russell’s changed a little bit. He’s doing something right now but I’m trying to get him back down here.”

Scott wouldn’t go into detail about his big idea or mention if it ties into the report years ago that Crowe had hired Nick Cave to have a shot at the script which would’ve seen Maximus in the afterlife.
