“Hidden Figures” May Join The 2016 Awards Race

In the wake of strong test screening scores and very healthy social media reaction to the recent trailer, Fox 2000 and Chernin Entertainment may be planning an awards run for the inspirational true story tale “Hidden Figures”.

Deadline reports that Fox is working on plans to qualify the film for the Oscars with a two-city showing in late December before its wide release on January 13th – Martin Luther King weekend. It may also get a premiere in full at AFI.

Addditionally, plans are being finalized for scenes from the film to be screened at the Toronto Film Festival on September 10th along with an outdoor performance by Pharrell Williams who produces the film and composed the score in collaboration with Hans Zimmer. The footage presentation will be followed by a Q&A with cast and filmmakers.

Based on the Margot Lee Shetterly book, the story follows black female number crunchers (played by the likes of Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer) who were the unsung heroes behind the early NASA space launches. Kirsten Dunst, Kevin Costner, Glen Powell and Jim Parsons also star.
