Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Goes Solo

Warner Bros. Pictures is splitting its “Shazam” film with word today that Dwayne Johnson is set to star in a solo film based on the DC villain and anti-hero Black Adam.

Johnson had previously been attached to play the character in the “Shazam” film, but a meeting with DC Films co-head Geoff Johns last week has led to the project being reconfigured. Now, both features are set to be developed simultaneously.

In the comics, Black Adam is actually Teth-Adam of Kahndaq who has powers comparable to that of Shazam including flight, strength, agility, lightning manipulation, as well as magic.

Johnson has expressed interested and been attached to the role for almost a decade at this point. With this reconfiguration, the first Shazam movie is expected to not feature Black Adam as its primary villain at this point – but he could appear later and in other DC titles.

“Shazam” was previously announced for an April 5th 2019 though that release date isn’t expected to hold. No filmmakers are attached to “Black Adam” at present.
