Diggs, Russell Join Hawke’s “Good Lord Bird”

Diggs Russell Join Hawkes Good Lord Bird

Daveed Diggs will play abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass and Wyatt Russell is playing U.S. army officer Jeb Stuart in “The Good Lord Bird,” the new eight-part limited event series executive produced by and starring Ethan Hawke as John Brown.

Blumhouse Television is producing the adaptation of James McBride’s novel about Onion (Joshua Johnson-Lionel), a fictional enslaved boy who is part of Brown’s motley crew of abolitionist soldiers during the time of Bleeding Kansas.

He eventually participated in the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry. Brown’s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended, but instigated the American Civil War.

Mark Richard serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Hawke, the pair penning the first episode. James McBride and Albert Hughes also executive produce with Hughes directing multiple episodes alongside Kevin Hooks, Darnell Martin and Haifaa Al Mansour.
