Birds Of Prey Aims To Be Less Male Gaze Y

Margot Robbie reprises her “Suicide Squad” role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Birds of Prey” movie. The new film marks something of a departure from ‘Squad’ with an economical budget and a shift in tone to an R-rated girl gang film.

The Cathy Yan-directed film is also changing up one thing from the previous film – Harley’s skimpy outfits. During a recent Vogue profile, the actress took the magazine on a tour of the set where they spoke with the movie’s costume designer, Erin Benach, who says the more demure look is “what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer.”

Robbie herself then added “Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y.” Robbie also confirmed that R rating, saying: “I think there’s a perception that a PG female-led action film is kind of considered a chick flick.”

Budgeted at $75 million, the film is slated to open early next year.
